Dr. Pulcinella Ruggero

Endometrial cancer

Predisposing conditions

  • Nulliparity
  • Late menopause
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Unbalanced oestrogen therapy
  • Tamoxifen
  • Atypical endometrial hyperplasia

Symptomatology

  • Vaginal blood loss in peri- and post-menopause
  • Premenopausal intermenstrual blood loss
  • In post-menopause, the risk of endometrial carcinoma is as high as 60-90 % in the presence of abnormal uterine bleeding as the endometrial thickness and age of the patient increases
  • Ultrasound demonstrating a thickened endometrial rhyme (>4mm) in patients who have post-menopausal bleeding. In this case the risk of having endometrial carcinoma is higher than 20%

Remember that bleeding can also be scarce and isolated and that in most cases the tumour is diagnosed when it is still inside the uterus and can rarely be asymptomatic.
